Major Shake-Up Looms in Pakistan Women’s Cricket Team as PCB Eyes Foreign Coach
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is planning significant changes to the coaching setup of its women’s national cricket team, with the board considering the appointment of a foreign head coach following a series of disappointing performances.
A reliable board source confirmed the development on Friday (October 30), according to reports.
The source said the PCB was considering bringing in a foreign coach after the team failed to show the expected improvement under the supervision of former Test fast bowler Wahab Riaz. The board is expected to advertise the head coach position soon.
The PCB aims to finalise the appointment of a new head coach before Pakistan’s upcoming tour of the West Indies.
Wahab Riaz began working as a mentor for the women’s team in December after former head coach Mohammad Wasim was removed from his position in November last year. However, the team’s lack of progress in the recent Women’s T20 World Cup and the series against Sri Lanka has prompted the board to reconsider its coaching arrangements.
Pakistan is scheduled to host the 2028 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The PCB wants to build a strong and competitive team ahead of the major tournament, which is one of the reasons behind its plan to appoint a foreign coach well in advance.
The Pakistan women’s team has undergone several coaching changes in recent years. However, the team achieved some notable successes under foreign coaches such as David Hemp and Mark Coles.
At least six different coaches have been associated with the Pakistan women’s team since 2020.
The appointment of a new foreign coach could mark another major change in Pakistan women’s cricket as the country prepares for the 2028 global tournament.
