Sarwar Alamgir Says Grassroots Leaders Will Get Priority in Union Parishad Elections

Sarwar Alamgir, Member of Parliament for Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari) and a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, held an exchange meeting with leaders and grassroots activists of four BNP units in the constituency.

The meeting brought together representatives of Fatikchhari Upazila BNP, Fatikchhari North Upazila BNP, Fatikchhari Municipality BNP and Nazirhat Municipality BNP.

The meeting was held at a community centre in Fatikchhari town on Thursday, October 22. It began at 9 am and continued until 5 pm. During the event, Sarwar Alamgir personally answered various questions raised by grassroots party activists.

Addressing the gathering, Alamgir said, “In the February 12 election, BNP activists and people from all religious and ethnic communities in this region—including Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Marmas and Santals—voted for me and elected me as a Member of Parliament with an overwhelming margin. I can never repay this debt to you. I am working alongside you to build a prosperous Fatikchhari.”

He added that various demands raised by local people were reflected in the 31-point programme announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He expressed hope that development projects would be implemented gradually.

Speaking about candidate selection for the upcoming Union Parishad (UP) elections, Alamgir said, “Just as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman nominated me from the grassroots, he will also give priority to grassroots leaders in the upcoming Union Parishad elections.”

Addressing party activists, he said there would be no opportunity for anyone to escape accountability for wrongdoing within the BNP. He referred to what he described as the prime minister’s action against wrongdoing, regardless of whether those involved were ministers or members of parliament, and urged party leaders to remain cautious and work responsibly.

Alamgir also sought everyone’s cooperation in strengthening Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership and accelerating the government’s development activities.

Former justice and BNP central committee member Faisal Mahmud Faizi, the chief guest at the meeting, said, “The grassroots are the lifeblood of the party. Grassroots activists brought the BNP to power. In the upcoming Union Parishad elections, MP Sarwar Alamgir and I will choose candidates from the grassroots.”

He urged party activists to support Sarwar Alamgir in implementing government development programmes and strengthening the party’s organisational activities.

The meeting was moderated by Zahir Azam Chowdhury, member secretary of Fatikchhari Upazila BNP.

Those present on the dais included veteran BNP leader Ahmed Hossain Talukdar; Mobarak Hossain Kanchan, convener of Fatikchhari Municipality BNP; Nazim Uddin Shaheen, member secretary of the district Krishak Dal; Ejhar Mia, convener of Nazirhat Municipality BNP; freedom fighters Mahbubul Alam Chowdhury and Fazl Bari; Nurul Huda; Abul Kalam Azad; Faridul Alam, chairman; and Shahnewaz Sebul, along with other local leaders.
