Shopkeepers to Be Fined for Indiscriminate Waste Disposal: CCC Administrator

Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Administrator Dr Shahadat Hossain has announced that shopkeepers will face fines if they dispose of garbage indiscriminately in public places across the city.

He made the announcement on Sunday, November 1, while inspecting Barrister Soltan Ahmed College Road in Ward No. 39 of Chattogram city.

During the visit, he inspected the condition of local roads and drainage systems and instructed officials to complete ongoing development work as quickly as possible.

He also directed the relevant authorities to remove excavated soil from roads, improve drainage facilities and strengthen cleanliness activities.

Dr Shahadat Hossain said maintaining the city was not solely the responsibility of the city corporation; citizens must also fulfil their responsibilities.

He stressed that every shopkeeper must keep an individual dustbin outside their shop.

According to him, CCC sanitation workers arrive every night at 11 pm to collect garbage. Therefore, throwing waste indiscriminately in front of shops is unacceptable.

Measures to Address Waterlogging and Drainage Problems

The CCC administrator said excessive rainfall this year had caused waterlogging in several parts of Chattogram.

He added that ongoing development and excavation work in different canals had temporarily disrupted water flow in some areas.

To address these problems, the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has been instructed to remove excavated soil from roads promptly. The electricity department has also been asked to complete the installation of electric poles without delay.

He further said that the city corporation would coordinate drainage improvements and cleaning activities. Additional sanitation workers may be appointed if necessary to remove accumulated soil and waste from drains.

Fines for Shopkeepers

Addressing shopkeepers and local residents, the administrator instructed every shop to keep a waste bin outside its premises.

He warned that shopkeepers would be fined if garbage was found dumped in front of their establishments.

He also said the concerned magistrate would be instructed to take necessary legal action.

Dr Shahadat Hossain urged residents to avoid throwing coconut husks, plastic and polythene waste on roads and public spaces, warning that such practices contribute to environmental pollution, dengue risks and waterlogging.

He emphasised that building a clean, green, healthy, safe and waterlogging-free city requires the active participation of every citizen alongside the city corporation.

Among those present during the inspection were CCC Chief Conservancy Officer Captain Shamim Mohammad Khan, Chief Engineer Anisur Rahman, Executive Engineer Ashikul Islam and other relevant officials.
